Boston Ujima Project

A cooperative business, arts, and investment ecosystem built by and for Boston's working-class Black, Indigenous, and communities of color. Takes its name from "ujima" (Swahili for collective work and responsibility). Runs a democratically governed community investment fund that residents and members vote on, alongside business support and cultural organizing, aiming to build local economic democracy rather than rely on extractive outside capital. A New Economy Coalition member organization.

Research check

Checked Oct 21, 2026 for ways to get involved: found the events listed above, and found no community to join.

Found, but this site has no way to show it yet:

  • Ujima Cafe runs twice a month through spring, summer, and fall, and its 2026 season ends with the 2026-10-22 Pumpkin Party (added as a single event). No 2027 dates are published, so there is no recurring series a reader can show up to until the season restarts — re-check in spring.

Re-checked 2026-10-21 for the recurrence backfill: #UjimaWednesdays (weekly, 6pm, open to the public) and Biplaw Mondays (weekly open restaurant office hours, online) are now recurring events. The individual autumn 2026 #UjimaWednesdays talks (Hard Currencies, Monetary Trust, History of Money) are sessions of that series, not separate records. The events page's link to its own #UjimaWednesdays page (ujimaboston.com/ujimawednesdays) returned 404 on 2026-10-21. Member-team meetings (Faith in Solidarity — formerly Anchor Institution Organizing — and Publications) are still left out as aimed at voting members rather than newcomers. The "Community Events" section lists other groups' events, which belong to those groups, not Ujima. No Slack, Discord, or forum: members engage through in-person and hybrid meetings plus a one-way newsletter, which doesn't meet the Forum bar.
